We can host a unique, memorable event for up to 100 people; on a secluded tidal beach or on board our vessels. Catering options range from the traditional New England Clambake to the Beach Barbeque.

The Valley Railroad Company – operating the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat – has been serving the lower Connecticut River Valley since 1971. We welcome visitors from throughout the state of Connecticut, the New England region and all over the world to ride our railroad, relax aboard our riverboat and visit our unique facilities. If you like to fish, be sure to bring a rod, as striped bass—including some large ones—enter the river in June. Stripers can be taken on natural bait, trolled swimbaits, soft-plastic baits, and flies fished along the marsh banks, creek mouths, and channel edges. Remember that a Massachusetts saltwater fishing license is required.

The food was amazing, the boat terrific, the staff super friendly and knowledgeable — I would do it again in a heartbeat. They timed our trip so that low tide would create a sandbar in the middle of the broad, wide Essex River as it moved toward the greater water. They set up our tables,chairs, volleyball nets, etc. and we had a ball while awaiting our delicious food. Really, truly a perfect way to celebrate a family event.
We’ve been cruising on RiverQuest since February. We had a great time on the Winter Wildlife Eagle Cruises. The Deep River Eagles always seem to be a mystery, but they have settled into their new nest on Selden Island and we are counting the days to see signs of a hatchling. They saw mature and immature eagles, a peregrine falcon, mergansers, great cormorants, the first tree swallows and a seal or two.
Many paddlers also set a course for Choate Island (also known as Hog Island), part of the Crane Wildlife Refuge and managed by the Trustees of Reservations. The Refuge includes seven islands (Choate, Long, Dean, Dilly, Pine, Patterson, and Round) in the Essex River estuary. Guided kayak trips to Choate and around the Crane Wildlife Refuge can be booked through the Trustees and Essex River Basin Adventures (see below). We say this because public access here is hard to come by; however, that shouldn’t stop you from visiting this beautiful North Shore gem at least once.
And there’s no finer way to end your day on the water than with a carton of local fried wholebellies or bowl of steamers washed down with a local ale! In addition to daily sightseeing cruises, Essex River Cruises offers private charters for all occasions. We kindly ask that you refrain from bringing full size meals on board the vessel.
